Bullying

cyberbully

Bullying is when someone or a group of people deliberately say or do things that are hurtful. It’s not “just teasing”-- bullies can make you feel unsafe and powerless, hurt your self-esteem, and keep you from going places or doing things you love. That’s unfair. And usually, a bully has problems too.

We all can do something to stop bullying. Whether it’s verbal (name-calling), social (ganging up on one person), physical or cyber, in Alberta, we consider this wrong and need to work against it. Some people might tell you to “Just ignore it,” but that actually doesn’t help. The first thing to know is that the more people act against bullying, the easier it is to stop it.

  • That means if you are bullied, you need to tell someone-- your parents, a teacher, your friends, your school counsellor.
  • Don’t blame yourself, and don’t try to handle it yourself. Tell the bully to stop it, and walk away.
  • If you see someone who is being bullied, tell the bully to stop.
  • Don’t fight bullying with more bullying-- just say, “Back off,” or “Stop it.”
  • Calling bullies names or fighting with them only keeps it going.
