Festivals

Street Performers Festival

If there’s one thing Edmontonians love, it’s festivals. Going to them, starting them, volunteering for them. It’s a whole experience that brings together people who share interests. Whether it’s art, theatre, music, film, outdoor activities or cultural heritage, there’s a festival for it.

And though summer is a great time for festivals in Edmonton, there’s usually something happening at least once a month during the cold months, beginning with a free outdoor New Year’s Eve celebration in Churchill Square, Ice on Whyte, and the Canoe theatre festival in January, and the Silver Skates Festival and the Birkenbeiner cross country ski races, and the Expanse Movement Arts Festival in February.

In the spring, you can enjoy the Kiwanis Music Festival and the Visualeyez performance art festival.

The summer season kicks off with the Dreamspeakers Film Festival and NextFest, which is the festival of emerging artists. You might think of participating in that one, if you are a performer. If you love improv comedy, there’s a festival for that, too - Improvaganza. Then, for visual arts fans, there’s The Works.

Further into summer, you’ll find festivals for Shakespeare lovers (The Free Will Shakespeare Festival), the Feats dance festival, the Jazz festival, the Street Performers Festival, Capital EX, the Heritage Festival, the Folk Festival, Cariwest, Dragon Boat festival, the Blues Festival, and the huge Fringe theatre festival.

Into the fall, there’s Symphony Under the Sky, Accordion Extravaganza, The Edmonton International Film Festival, Edmonton Chante, Farmfair/Canadian Finals Rodeo, Global Visions, and the Festival of Trees.
